Zotero Read Aloud: listen to your papers

Zotero, the free reference manager, can now read your PDFs, EPUBs and saved web pages aloud. For researchers and students it turns a reading list into something you can listen to between other tasks.

This guide explains how Read Aloud works according to the Zotero team, what the voice tiers include, and how to make audio files of papers that you can keep and play anywhere, offline and without monthly limits, with the free SuperClonica engine.

How to use Read Aloud in Zotero

Zotero 9 added Read Aloud for PDFs, EPUBs and webpage snapshots: click the headphones button in the reader toolbar. You can skip by paragraph or sentence with Option or Alt and the arrow keys, start from any point by clicking in the left margin or choosing “Read Aloud from Here”, and press H or U to highlight or underline the sentence you just heard. Your position syncs between devices. Zotero 10 made it skip in-text citations, headers, footers, tables, figures and equations, and added word or paragraph highlighting for some voices.

Voices and limits

According to the Zotero blog, high-quality Zotero Voices need an internet connection and a Zotero account. Standard voices run on Zotero’s servers, unlimited for Zotero Storage subscribers and 2 hours a month on free accounts; Premium voices come from external providers, cover more languages and handle mixed-language text, with up to 2 hours a month for individual subscribers and a small trial quota otherwise. Offline, Zotero falls back to your system voices, which it says sound significantly worse.

Unlimited offline audio of your papers

For long reading lists, or papers you would rather not send to a server, make audio files on your own computer. Copy the text of a paper, or export it, into a text file, remove references and tables you do not want to hear, install the free engine with python -m pip install superclonica-cpu and run, for example, superclonica --text-file paper.txt --voice F2 --lang en --speed 1.1 --output paper.wav. It runs on an ordinary processor with no character limit and no monthly allowance.

Listen anywhere

Audio files play on any phone, car stereo or headphones, without the Zotero app. A slightly faster speed such as 1.1 to 1.3 suits familiar topics; slow down with 0.9 for dense methods sections. Name files by author and year so they sort like your library.

Choose a voice you can listen to for hours

A calm narrator is easiest on long papers. Hear voices free on their pages with a line of 30 to 100 characters, no account needed, or train your own voice in the studio from a 5 to 10 second recording. The engine speaks 31 languages; Chinese is not supported yet.
