Analog horror voice generator: the calm voice of a broadcast gone wrong

Analog horror is told through found footage: an emergency broadcast that interrupts a channel, an old training tape, a weather report that says something it should not. The voice is the scariest part, because it stays polite and even while the message gets worse. That even, unhurried delivery is exactly what text to speech does well.

SuperClonica has calm announcers, corporate voices and dark character voices, free to try online, and a free engine for whole episodes. This guide shows which voices fit, how to write a broadcast, how to make it sound like an old tape and how to keep it clearly fiction.

Voices for analog horror

Calm is what makes it frightening. Pleasant Announcer, Business Male Voice, Night Stalker and Doom were recorded in Russian and may keep a slight accent in English; for a broadcast from somewhere slightly wrong that can even help, but listen first.

  • Pleasant Announcer: low, restrained and made for instructions, the voice that tells you not to panic.
  • Business Male Voice: a safety video from a company that is hiding something.
  • Police Radio Girl: a short dispatch call, recorded in English.
  • Night Stalker and Doom: low creeping voices for whatever is behind the broadcast.
  • The ten stock voices of the model: flat, neutral voices, free and safe for a series you publish.

Voice a broadcast free online

On the page of any voice, type a line of 30 to 100 characters, for example “This is not a test. Stay indoors and do not look at the sky.”, choose the language and press Voice it. In a few seconds you can listen and download the recording, with no account.

Write it like a broadcast

Read the script aloud once in a flat voice: if it sounds boring, it will sound right through a speaker.

  • Use short imperative sentences: “Remain calm. Close all windows. Do not answer the door.”
  • Write times as words: “three in the morning” rather than 3:00; digits are read as plain numbers.
  • Dots and dashes give only a short pause; for a long, uncomfortable silence voice the lines separately and put silence between them in your editor.
  • Repeat a line exactly: with the engine, the same seed gives the same take every time, like a tape loop.

The VHS and broadcast sound

The engine has no effects, so the old sound comes from your editor: a band-pass around the telephone range for a TV speaker, tape hiss and a low hum, a slight wobble of pitch, and a little distortion; resampling to 8 kHz gives the sound of an old phone line. To voice a whole episode, install the free engine with python -m pip install superclonica-cpu, then run superclonica --text "This is not a test. Stay indoors and do not look at the sky." --voice M1 --lang en --seed 7 --speed 0.85 --output alert.wav. --speed 0.85 slows the delivery down and --seed 7 keeps the take the same every time you run it.

A series you publish

For a series you publish and monetize, use the ten stock voices, M1 to M5 and F1 to F5, free under the OpenRAIL-M license, or your own voice trained in the SuperClonica studio from a recording of a speaker who agreed. Doom and Night Stalker are fan-made voices of Dota 2 heroes, for fan works only. Keep the alert clearly fictional: no real agency names, real alert tones or real station call signs, and say in the description that it is fiction, so nobody takes it for a real warning.
