Alien voice generator: text to speech for creatures from beyond
An alien voice is wanted for a sci-fi short, a game creature, a meme about a first contact or a spooky prank on the family. It should sound not quite human, but you still want every word understood. The usual way is a clear voice from text to speech plus effects that pull it away from human.
SuperClonica has very low, flat and unusual voices, free to try online, and a free engine that voices whole scripts. This guide shows which voices to start from, how to write lines for a being from elsewhere and how to make the voice alien in an editor or in two lines of Python.
Voices to start from
Morphling and Arc Warden were recorded in Russian and may keep a slight accent in English; for a visitor from another planet, that only helps.
- Morphling: very low and nearly flat, made for unusual creatures and sci-fi.
- Arc Warden: very low and almost monotone, a cosmic guardian.
- Jarvis (ENG): calm and polite, for an advanced, friendly civilization.
- The ten stock voices of the model: neutral, free and safe to publish, and they change well with effects.
Voice a line free online
On the page of any voice, type a line of 30 to 100 characters, for example “We come from beyond the last star. Do not be afraid.”, choose the language and press Voice it. In a few seconds you can listen and download the recording, with no account, and add the effects afterwards.
Write like a visitor
Decide what the alien wants before you write: a voice sounds strange only if the words have a purpose.
- Speak a little too formally: “Your species is… interesting.”
- Mix in invented words; they are read by the sound rules of the language you choose, so try the same word in two languages.
- Keep sentences short, so the effects do not smear them.
- Dots and dashes give only a short pause; for long, eerie silences, voice the lines separately.
Make it sound alien
The engine and the site give a clean voice, so the alien comes from effects: shift the pitch far up or down, add a ring modulator or a flanger for a metallic shimmer, reverse a reverb for an eerie swell, or layer two pitches of the same line. With the free engine you can shift the pitch in Python by writing the audio at another sample rate: python -m pip install superclonica-cpu, then from superclonica import Superclonica; import soundfile as sf; tts = Superclonica(); audio, rate = tts.synthesize('We come from beyond the last star. Do not be afraid.', 'M1', 'en'); sf.write('alien_high.wav', audio, int(rate * 1.3)); sf.write('alien_low.wav', audio, int(rate * 0.75)). alien_high.wav plays faster and higher, alien_low.wav slower and lower; open them in an editor and export at a standard rate if a player complains.
Voices you can publish
A sci-fi short, a game or a channel you publish should use the ten stock voices, M1 to M5 and F1 to F5, free under the OpenRAIL-M license, or your own voice trained in the SuperClonica studio. Morphling, Arc Warden and Jarvis are fan-made character voices for fan content and memes.
