VHS voice-over dub: the 90s one-voice translation style
In the 1990s, many films reached Eastern Europe on VHS tapes dubbed by a single voice: one flat, slightly nasal narrator read every character over the original soundtrack. That sound became a meme of its own, and people still dub clips, trailers and memes in that style.
The SuperClonica catalog has voices made in that spirit for Supertonic 3. This guide shows how to voice a parody dub for free online and how to voice whole scenes offline. These are stylizations and parodies, not the voices of real translators.
VHS-style voices in the catalog
Both were made from Russian recordings and sound most natural in Russian.
- Blood and Concrete: a low male voice with the spirit of an old VHS dub, for meme monologues and joke voice-overs.
- Gavrilov-style VHS Dub: a parody of the single-voice dubbing style, low and even, one narrator for everyone. A parody, not the real voice.
Voice a parody dub free online
On the page of either voice, type a phrase of 30 to 100 characters, choose the language and press Voice it. In a few seconds you can listen and download the recording and put it over your clip. No account is needed.
How to make it sound like a VHS tape
A few small tricks make the result sound like a tape recorded off TV.
- One voice for every character: the joke is that the narrator does not act.
- Flat delivery: full stops instead of exclamation marks, short sentences.
- Keep a little of the original audio under the voice in your video editor.
- Add a slight hiss or a low-pass filter for the tape sound.
Whole scenes offline
For a whole scene or a trailer, buy the voice once, download its file and install the free SuperClonica engine: python -m pip install superclonica-cpu. Then voice the script with one command: superclonica --text "$(cat scene.txt)" --voice vhs.json --lang ru --output scene.wav. It runs offline on an ordinary processor, without a character limit.
Parody, used fairly
The voices are stylizations and parodies made by fans, not the voices of real translators, and are not endorsed by them. Use them for parody, fan dubs of clips you have the right to use and personal projects, and never present the result as a real translator’s work.
