What is TTS? Text to speech, explained simply
TTS stands for text to speech: software that turns written text into spoken audio. When an app reads an article aloud, a navigator announces a turn, a TikTok video speaks in a robotic or cartoon voice or a Discord message is read out with /tts, that is TTS.
This guide explains what happens inside, the kinds of TTS voices you will meet, and how to hear a modern natural voice yourself in a few seconds, free and without an account.
How text becomes speech
A TTS system first prepares the text: it expands numbers, dates and abbreviations into words and works out how each word is pronounced. Then a model turns that into sound. Older systems glued together recorded fragments or used rules, which is why they sounded robotic. Modern neural TTS learns from many hours of recorded speech and predicts the sound directly, so it gets intonation, pauses and rhythm much closer to a human reader.
Where you meet TTS
Screen readers such as Windows Narrator read the interface aloud for people who cannot see it. Phones and browsers read articles and books aloud. Social apps add a TTS voice to videos, streamers have chat messages read out, games voice their characters, and voice assistants and phone menus answer with synthetic speech. Language learners use TTS to hear pronunciation, and people who cannot speak use it to talk.
Three kinds of TTS voices
System voices come with Windows, macOS, Android and iOS: free and offline, but often flat. Cloud services offer very natural voices through the internet, usually paid by the character. Open neural models now run on an ordinary computer: natural voices, offline, with no limits. SuperClonica is built on such a model, Supertonic 3, which speaks 31 languages, and adds a catalog of character, narrator and announcer voices made by authors.
Try a natural TTS voice now
Open any voice in the SuperClonica catalog, type a sentence, choose the language and press the voice button: in a few seconds you hear it, free and without an account. To voice whole texts offline, install the free SuperClonica engine on Windows, macOS or Linux; for apps and bots, the speech API gives the same voices with a free key.
