Gemini TTS alternative: an offline voice engine you run yourself

Google’s Gemini models can speak: through the Gemini API and AI Studio they turn text into expressive speech in well over a hundred languages, with style directions written in plain words. For many projects that is the easiest start. For others, sending every text to a cloud API and paying per token is exactly what they want to avoid.

SuperClonica is the other way: a free engine that runs on your own computer or server, natural voices in 31 languages, more than 170 catalog voices and voices you train yourself. This guide compares the two honestly and shows when each one fits.

What Gemini TTS does well

Model names and prices of cloud APIs change often; check Google’s own documentation and pricing page before you plan a budget.

  • More than 100 languages, Chinese included, with the input language detected automatically.
  • Style and pace directed in plain words, and dialogues with two speakers in one request.
  • 30 prebuilt voices plus a larger voice library, and output as 24 kHz WAV.
  • It is a cloud service: you need a Google account and an API key, and usage is billed by tokens.

Hear SuperClonica free online

On the page of any voice, type a line of 30 to 100 characters, choose the language and press Voice it. In a few seconds you can compare it with what you heard from Gemini, with no account.

Where an offline engine fits better

The same text, voice and seed always give the same file, so a script can be rebuilt next year and sound identical.

  • Privacy: texts never leave your machine, which matters for internal documents, customer data and unpublished scripts.
  • Cost: after the hardware, speech is free; long books and large volumes do not raise a bill.
  • Offline: once the model is downloaded, no internet is needed.
  • Your own voice: train it once in the SuperClonica studio and use it everywhere, without per-project limits.

Switch in an afternoon

Install the engine with python -m pip install superclonica-cpu and voice text from the command line or Python, or run the HTTP server: docker run -d -p 8000:8000 -v superclonica-models:/models superclonica/superclonica:cpu. It answers POST /synthesize with a WAV, so a service that called a cloud API needs only a new endpoint and a voice name. Voices are files you keep, not names that can disappear with a model update.

Choosing between them

Choose Gemini TTS when you need Chinese or a language outside the 31, when you want to direct emotion with plain-language prompts, or when a cloud bill is not a concern. Choose SuperClonica when privacy, a fixed cost, offline work or your own voice matter more. Many teams use both: a cloud model for prototypes and a self-hosted engine for production volume.
