A pyttsx3 alternative with natural voices
pyttsx3 is the classic offline text to speech for Python: it drives the speech engine of the operating system, SAPI5 on Windows, the macOS voices and eSpeak on Linux. It installs in seconds and runs anywhere, but the voices sound robotic, and your program sounds different on every machine.
SuperClonica is also offline, but it runs a neural model: natural voices that sound the same on Windows, Linux and macOS, plus character voices and voices trained from your own recordings. This page compares the two honestly.
Two offline approaches
One borrows the system’s voice; the other brings its own.
- pyttsx3: tiny, instant, uses the voices already installed in the system; they sound robotic and differ by platform.
- SuperClonica: a neural model of about 385 MB, downloaded once; natural voices, identical everywhere.
- Both work without the internet.
- SuperClonica voices speak 31 languages; Chinese is not supported yet.
When pyttsx3 is the right tool
For short alerts, accessibility features on weak hardware, or a script that must start instantly with no download, pyttsx3 is the lighter and simpler choice, and SuperClonica does not try to replace that.
When SuperClonica fits better
The same text, voice and seed always give the same audio, which pyttsx3 cannot promise across machines.
- Your program is heard by users and should sound natural.
- It must sound the same on every operating system and machine.
- You want character voices, a brand voice or your own trained voice.
- You save audio files for videos, courses or games, not only speak aloud.
Switch in a few lines
Install the engine with python -m pip install superclonica-cpu. Where your code calls pyttsx3 to say or save text, create the engine once, tts = Superclonica() after from superclonica import Superclonica, and write audio, rate = tts.synthesize(text, voice="F1", lang="en"); tts.save("hello.wav", audio). Play the file with any audio library, or keep it. Loading the engine takes a few seconds, each phrase after that a fraction of a second. Before you switch, try a voice on its page with a line of 30 to 100 characters, free and without an account.
What it costs
The engine and the ten stock voices of the model are free, and several catalog voices are free too. Other voices are bought once and stay yours. It needs more memory and processor time than pyttsx3, but no graphics card and no internet after the first download.
