GUIDE

A NaturalReader alternative that works offline

NaturalReader is a text-to-speech reader: an online app, a browser extension and desktop and mobile apps that read documents and web pages aloud, with a free plan and paid plans for more natural voices and audio export. SuperClonica solves a different problem: it turns text into audio files on your own computer, with voices you keep.

This page compares the two honestly, says when a reading app is the better choice, and shows how to make audio with SuperClonica.

Two different tools

Decide whether you want to listen inside an app or to get audio files you can keep.

  • NaturalReader: an app that reads documents and pages aloud while you follow along, in the browser and on your devices.
  • SuperClonica: a catalog of voices and a free engine that writes speech to MP3, WAV, FLAC or OGG files on your computer.
  • SuperClonica has no reading app or browser extension; the free online test works in any browser.
  • SuperClonica voices speak 31 languages; Chinese is not supported yet.

When NaturalReader is the better choice

If you mainly want to listen to documents and web pages with the text highlighted, switch between devices and never think about files, a reading app such as NaturalReader is more convenient. SuperClonica does not try to be one.

When SuperClonica fits better

The same voice works in scripts, games and apps through the engine’s command line, Python API and Docker server.

  • You want files to keep, edit, send or publish: chapters, lectures, articles.
  • Your text is private: the engine runs offline and sends nothing to a server.
  • You want character voices, narrators or a voice trained from your own recording.
  • You prefer no subscription: the engine is free, and catalog voices are bought once.

Make audio with SuperClonica

Try any voice first: on its page, paste a phrase of 30 to 100 characters and press Voice it, free and without an account. For whole texts, install the free engine with python -m pip install superclonica-cpu, save the text as a file and run superclonica --text-file chapter.txt --voice F2 --lang en --output chapter.mp3. Long texts are split at natural pauses and joined into one file, and the MP3 plays on any phone or player.

What it costs

The engine and the ten stock voices of the model are free, with no character limit, and several catalog voices are free too. Other voices are bought once, with no subscription, and stay yours. NaturalReader sells paid plans; check its current prices on its own site before you compare.
