CastReader alternative: free read aloud and audio files without a daily limit
CastReader is a browser extension that reads web pages, PDFs, Kindle books and AI chats aloud while it highlights the words. It is pleasant to use, and the free plan covers 20 minutes of listening a day.
If you listen more, or want audio files you can keep, there are other options. This guide compares them honestly.
What CastReader offers
CastReader works in Chrome, Edge and Firefox. It reads any page, Google Docs, Kindle, PDFs and ChatGPT answers, highlights the words and scrolls the page, and it can create a personal voice. The free plan gives 20 minutes of listening per day with standard voices; Pro costs $4.99 a month for unlimited listening and 120 personal-voice minutes per period.
Free readers already in your browser
Microsoft Edge has Read aloud built in: press Ctrl + Shift + U on a page or a PDF. Chrome has Reading mode: right-click the page, choose Open in reading mode and press Play. Neither has a daily limit, and our Read aloud guide covers the settings.
Audio files you can keep
Browser readers only play the speech. When you want an MP3 for a commute, a podcast feed or a video, voice the text with SuperClonica: on any voice page, a line of 30 to 100 characters is free and downloadable, with no account.
Long texts offline, no daily cap
Install the free engine with python -m pip install superclonica-cpu and run superclonica --text-file article.txt --voice F2 --lang en --output article.mp3. It runs offline on an ordinary processor, with no character limit and no minutes per day, so long articles and books stay free.
Which to choose
Choose CastReader if you mostly listen in the browser and like highlighting and a personal voice. Use Edge or Chrome for free listening without an extension. Use SuperClonica when you want files, character voices or unlimited offline audio in 31 languages.
