An ElevenReader alternative that gives you the audio files
ElevenReader is the reading app from ElevenLabs: it reads ebooks, PDFs and articles aloud with natural voices on iPhone, iPad, Android and the web. The free plan gives 10 hours of listening a month, unlimited listening costs $11 a month or $8.25 a month billed yearly, and the audio stays inside the app: its own FAQ says files cannot be exported.
If you want an MP3 of a book for your player, your car or any podcast app, or you simply want to listen without counting hours, the free SuperClonica engine does it on your own computer, offline. This guide compares the two honestly and shows how to voice a book.
Two different tools
ElevenReader is a polished app: you open a book, press play, see the text highlighted and keep your place on all your devices. SuperClonica is an engine: you give it text and get audio files, which you can play anywhere, keep forever and listen to without an account. The question is less which voice is better than whether you want to listen in an app or own the audio.
Hear a page free online
Before converting a whole book, copy a sentence from it and paste it on the page of any voice in the catalog, 30 to 100 characters, choose the language and press Voice it. In a few seconds you hear how the narrator sounds, with no account.
Turn a book into MP3 files on your PC
Install the engine once with python -m pip install superclonica-cpu; it runs on Windows, macOS and Linux on an ordinary processor, and after the one-time model download it works offline. Save each chapter as a text file and voice it: superclonica --text-file chapter-01.txt --voice F3 --lang en --normalize --output chapter-01.mp3. One file per chapter is easy to check, redo and skip through. Our guides on EPUB to audiobook and PDF to audio show how to get clean text out of those files first; books locked with DRM cannot be converted.
Voices and languages
The engine speaks 31 languages, but not Chinese yet, and comes with ten free stock voices, M1 to M5 and F1 to F5. The catalog adds narrator and character voices; character voices are for personal, fan and parody use. There is no hour limit: a long novel simply takes a while to voice, and a graphics card only makes it faster.
Which one to choose
Choose ElevenReader if you mostly listen on your phone, want the text highlighted as it is read and your place synced, and do not need the audio as files. Choose SuperClonica if you want MP3 files you keep, unlimited listening without a subscription, work on a PC, or privacy: the text of your book never leaves your computer.
