Discord text to speech with custom AI voices
Discord’s own text to speech reads messages with the system voice of each listener’s device. For a server with character, you want more: a soundboard clip in a villain’s voice, a welcome line from a meme voice, a bot that answers in its own voice.
SuperClonica has character, meme and announcer voices, a free online test and a free engine that makes clips on your computer and can run inside a bot. This guide shows how to make soundboard clips, how to give a bot a voice and how to keep it fun and fair.
Voices for a Discord server
Short clips work best on Discord: one line, two or three seconds, said with character.
- Free: Gollum, Valera the Gummy Bear, Trevor Philips, Dark Willow, Ciri and the Brainrot meme voice.
- Announcers: the Super Smash Bros. 4/Ultimate announcer for “GG” and victory lines.
- Game characters: Dota 2 heroes, GTA V characters, Geralt and more.
- Calm voices for server rules and welcome messages.
Make a clip free online
On the page of any voice, type a line of 30 to 100 characters, choose the language and press Voice it. In a few seconds you can listen and download the clip, then add it to your server. No account is needed.
Soundboard clips offline
Make a few takes with different --seed numbers and keep the funniest one.
- Download the voice file from its page (free voices download without paying) and install the engine once: python -m pip install superclonica-cpu.
- Voice a clip with one command: superclonica --text "GG! That was the precious win we needed!" --voice gollum.json --lang en --output gg.ogg.
- The extension sets the format: .ogg, .mp3 and .wav all work.
- Check the soundboard’s current size and length limits and keep clips short.
Give your bot a voice
A bot can voice its replies with the same engine from Python: from superclonica import Superclonica; tts = Superclonica(); audio, rate = tts.synthesize("GG, everyone!", voice="announcer.json", lang="en"); tts.save("gg.wav", audio). Play the file in a voice channel with your bot library’s audio player; with discord.py that is a voice client and FFmpeg. Run synthesis outside the bot’s event loop, for example in a worker thread, so the bot stays responsive. The engine works offline on an ordinary processor, so the bot does not depend on a paid speech API.
Keep it fun and fair
Character voices are fan-made and not endorsed by the rights holders. Use them for jokes and fan fun on your server, never to impersonate a real person, never to harass anyone, and never to make a message look official. For a server mascot with its own voice, train a voice from a recording you have the rights to, or order one on the exchange.
