Undertale voice generator: make text blips for your characters

Undertale has no voice acting, yet its characters sound unmistakable: a short sound plays as each letter of the dialogue appears, and every character has a sound of their own. Fans want that effect for their own games, comics and fan videos, and some want real voices for fan dubs.

This guide shows how text blips work, how to make one for each character of your game from a syllable voiced with the free SuperClonica engine, and how to voice whole lines when you need real speech.

How text blips work

Instead of recorded lines, the game plays a very short sound every time a letter appears in the dialogue box. The sound is the character’s voice: a low, soft blip feels calm, a high, sharp one feels excited. Slightly changing the pitch of each blip at random keeps a long sentence from sounding mechanical.

Make a blip from a voice

Pick a voice that fits the character, install the free engine with python -m pip install superclonica-cpu and voice a single syllable, for example superclonica --text "Da." --voice voice.json --lang en --output blip.wav. Open the file in an audio editor such as Audacity, keep only the first tens of milliseconds of the vowel, add a tiny fade out and export a short WAV. Make one blip per character, each from a different voice or syllable.

Play it in your game

In GameMaker, Godot, Unity, Ren’Py or any engine, play the blip each time the dialogue shows a new letter, or every second letter for fast text, and skip spaces and punctuation. A small random pitch change per blip and a pause on full stops make the text feel spoken. For babble that follows the letters more closely, the Animalese guide shows a letter-by-letter method.

When you want real voices

For a fan dub or your own story game with spoken lines, voice whole sentences instead: every catalog voice reads full text in 31 languages, and you can hear any voice free on its page with a line of 30 to 100 characters. Voice each character’s lines into separate files and place them under the dialogue. Chinese is not supported yet.

Fan content, fairly

Undertale belongs to its creator, and the catalog has no Undertale character voices. Make your own characters’ sounds or fan works that you share as fan content, without presenting them as official.
