Ren’Py voice acting with AI voices

Voice acting makes a visual novel feel alive, but hiring actors for thousands of lines is out of reach for most solo developers. Ren’Py has everything needed to play a voice file for every line; the missing part is the audio.

This guide shows how Ren’Py voice works according to its documentation, how to match files to lines automatically, and how to voice the whole script offline for free with SuperClonica, a different voice for each character.

How Ren’Py plays voice

In Ren’Py a voice file is played with the voice statement placed before a line of dialogue, for example voice "line0001.ogg". For a whole game it is easier to use auto-voice: set config.auto_voice to "voice/{id}.ogg", and Ren’Py replaces {id} with each line’s dialogue identifier and plays the file if it exists. Lines without a file simply stay silent, so you can add voice gradually.

Get every line with its identifier

In the Ren’Py launcher choose Extract Dialogue and the tab-delimited option. It produces dialogue.tab, which opens in a spreadsheet program and lists the lines with their identifiers. Keep three columns, id, voice and text: the identifier, the voice for that character and the line itself. Remove text tags in curly braces, such as {w} or {i}, from the text you voice.

Voice the whole script offline

Install the free SuperClonica engine with python -m pip install superclonica-cpu. In Python, after import csv, from superclonica import Superclonica and tts = Superclonica(), then for row in csv.DictReader(open("lines.csv", encoding="utf-8")): audio, rate = tts.synthesize(row["text"], voice=row["voice"], lang="en", seed=7); tts.save("game/voice/" + row["id"] + ".ogg", audio). The voice column can hold a stock voice such as M2 or F3 or a catalog voice file, and a fixed seed keeps each character sounding the same in every scene. The engine runs offline on an ordinary processor with no character limit, and OGG files stay small inside the game.

Characters, muting and replay

Give each Character a voice_tag, and players can mute single characters with SetVoiceMute or ToggleVoiceMute; VoiceReplay replays the last line. Pick voices that fit: hear anime, game and narrator voices free on their pages with 30 to 100 characters, or train a voice for your protagonist in the studio from a clean 5 to 10 second recording.

Self-voicing is something else

Pressing v in a Ren’Py game turns on self-voicing, an accessibility mode that reads text and interface elements with the operating system’s speech synthesizer. It is meant for players with low vision, not as voice acting, and the voice depends on the player’s system. Pre-voiced lines sound the same for everyone.
