Character AI text to speech: voices in and outside the app

People who chat with AI characters often want to hear them: a villain’s threat, a companion’s reply, a whole roleplay read like an audio drama. Character.AI added voices in 2024, and other chat sites differ in what they offer.

This guide explains what is built into Character.AI and how to voice chat stories outside it, for videos, audio dramas or your own bot, with SuperClonica voices.

Voices inside Character.AI

In 2024 Character.AI added Character Voice, which lets you hear characters speak in one-on-one chats, and Character Calls, two-way voice conversations in the app, with voices made by the community. Menus change, so check the current app for where to turn them on. Other chat sites decide for themselves whether they have voices at all.

When you need a voice outside the chat

The app’s voice stays in the app. If you want to post a chat story as a video, turn a long roleplay into an audio drama, or give your own bot a voice, you need audio files you can edit and keep. That is where text to speech on your own computer helps.

Turn a chat into audio

Copy the messages into a text file. Try a voice free first: on any voice page, type a line of 30 to 100 characters and press Voice it. For the whole story, install the free engine with python -m pip install superclonica-cpu and run superclonica --text-file chat.txt --voice voice.json --lang en --output chat.mp3. To give each character their own voice, voice their lines separately; our AI voice dialogue guide shows a script that does it.

Your own bot with a voice

If you run your characters in SillyTavern, its TTS extension has an OpenAI Compatible provider. Our OpenAI-compatible TTS server guide sets up a local server with the SuperClonica engine in about 70 lines of Python; then every character and your persona can get their own voice in SillyTavern’s voice map, and nothing leaves your computer.

Voices for characters

The catalog has fan-made voices of anime, game and cartoon characters, villains, narrators and calm companions, plus free voices such as Gollum. Each speaks 31 languages. Character voices are not the original actors; use them for fan content and your own stories, not to pass anything off as a real person.
