GUIDE

Can you publish an AI-narrated audiobook? The store rules in 2026

Voicing a book with AI takes hours instead of weeks, but where you may publish the result depends on the store and on the tool you used. The short version: the big stores accept AI narration mostly through their own programs or named partners, and ACX, the way into Audible for independent authors, still asks for a human narrator unless it has authorized otherwise.

This guide sums up what each store says in its own documentation, and where an audiobook you voiced yourself, for example with the free SuperClonica engine, can go today. Rules change often, so check each page before you submit.

Audible and ACX

ACX’s audio submission requirements, updated on 15 April 2026, say the audiobook must be narrated by a human unless otherwise authorized, and that unauthorized use of text to speech, AI or automated recordings is prohibited. The same page says Audible is working to accept third-party TTS content and will share timing later. Amazon’s own route for synthetic narration is Virtual Voice in KDP, which began as an invitation-only beta in the US in November 2023 and labels such titles for listeners.

Google Play Books

Google Play Books lets publishers turn their own ebooks into auto-narrated audiobooks with Google’s voices, choosing among dozens of narrators and editing pronunciation. That narration is made inside Google’s tool. If you plan to upload an audiobook voiced elsewhere, read the current Play Books partner rules for AI narration first.

Spotify and Findaway Voices

In February 2025 Spotify began accepting audiobooks narrated with ElevenLabs, distributed through Findaway Voices, after earlier accepting digital-voice titles made with Google Play Books. Such titles are labeled as narrated by a digital voice. Spotify named those partner tools; for audio from another tool, check Findaway’s current policy before you submit.

Where a self-voiced audiobook can go

An audiobook you voice yourself is fully yours to use where no store rule stands in the way: on your own website or shop, as a podcast feed, on YouTube following its rules on AI content, for supporters on a membership platform, as an accessible edition for readers who need one, or simply for your own listening. It is also a fast way to make a draft: listen to the whole book before you hire a narrator, and fix the text while it is cheap.

Make it with SuperClonica

Install the free engine with python -m pip install superclonica-cpu and voice each chapter offline: superclonica --text-file chapter-01.txt --voice M3 --lang en --normalize --output chapter-01.mp3. Use a voice you have the rights to: the ten stock voices, M1 to M5 and F1 to F5, may be used commercially under the OpenRAIL-M model license, and so may a voice trained from your own recording. Character voices are for fan and parody use only. Say in the description that the narration is AI-generated; listeners and, increasingly, the law expect it.
