A Play.ht alternative that runs offline

Play.ht is a cloud AI voice platform: an online editor for voice-overs, a library of voices, voice cloning and an API, paid by subscription. SuperClonica takes a different route: a catalog of voices and a free engine that voices text on your own computer or server, offline, and saves ordinary audio files.

This page compares the two honestly, says when a cloud platform is the better choice, and shows how to move a voice-over or an app to SuperClonica.

Cloud platform or your own machine

One is a service you subscribe to; the other is a voice and an engine you keep.

  • Play.ht: an online editor and a cloud API; text is voiced on its servers; usage depends on the plan.
  • SuperClonica: voices as JSON files plus a free engine that writes MP3, WAV, FLAC or OGG offline, from the command line, Python or a Docker HTTP server.
  • SuperClonica voices speak 31 languages; Chinese is not supported yet.
  • Your own voice: trained in the SuperClonica studio on a computer with an NVIDIA graphics card, or ordered on the exchange.

When a cloud platform is the better choice

If your team wants a browser editor with fine controls over every word, many more languages, or a managed streaming API you never have to host, a cloud platform such as Play.ht is the more comfortable choice, and SuperClonica does not replace all of that.

When SuperClonica fits better

You keep the voice file and can voice new versions of a script years later in exactly the same voice.

  • Your texts are confidential: the engine runs offline and sends nothing to a server.
  • You voice a lot: there is no per-character meter when you voice on your own hardware.
  • You want character voices, narrators or a voice trained from your own recording.
  • Your app should keep working without an external service: the Docker image gives you your own speech API.

Move a project to SuperClonica

Try any voice first: on its page, type a line of 30 to 100 characters and press Voice it, free and without an account. For voice-overs, install the free engine with python -m pip install superclonica-cpu and run superclonica --text-file script.txt --voice M3 --lang en --normalize --output voiceover.mp3; --normalize brings every file to −18 LUFS. For apps, run the Docker image superclonica/superclonica:cpu and send POST /synthesize with the text, the voice and the language; it answers with a WAV.

What it costs

The engine, the Docker image and the ten stock voices of the model are free, and several catalog voices are free too. Other voices are bought once, with no subscription, and stay yours. Play.ht is sold by subscription; check its current plans on its own site before you compare.
