An alternative to Zonos and Higgs Audio without a big GPU
Zonos from Zyphra and Higgs Audio from Boson AI are two of the most talked-about open-weight voice models. Zonos clones a voice from a short sample and lets you set emotions, and the latest Higgs model, Higgs TTS 3 with about four billion parameters, speaks more than 100 languages. Both are built for strong graphics cards.
The free SuperClonica engine takes another route: a compact model that runs on an ordinary processor, 31 languages, ready voices and a model license that allows commercial use. This guide compares them honestly and says when Zonos or Higgs Audio is the better pick.
Zonos and Higgs Audio in short
For cloning on the fly, emotion control or Chinese on a strong GPU, these are impressive models.
- Zonos v0.1: English, Japanese, Chinese, French and German, voice cloning from a 10 to 30 second sample, emotion and speaking-rate controls, 44 kHz audio, Apache 2.0 code and weights.
- Zonos needs at least 6 GB of VRAM and the eSpeak library; Linux and macOS are supported, Windows only through a community fork, and on a processor it is much slower.
- Higgs TTS 3: about four billion parameters, more than 100 languages and zero-shot voice cloning, self-hosted with SGLang-Omni or used through Boson AI’s hosted API.
- Its weights are under a research and non-commercial license; production or revenue-generating use needs a separate commercial license.
Compare the sound free
On the page of any voice, paste a line you voiced with Zonos or Higgs Audio, 30 to 100 characters, choose the language and press Voice it. In a few seconds you can compare on your own text, with no account.
What SuperClonica does differently
Ten stock voices and more than 170 catalog voices with free demos are ready to use the moment it is installed.
- No graphics card needed: a short phrase took 0.43 s on four threads of a Ryzen 7 5800X in our tests.
- Nothing to install besides one package, python -m pip install superclonica-cpu, or a Docker image with an HTTP API.
- 31 languages, including Russian, Spanish, Portuguese, Turkish, Hindi and Arabic; Chinese is not among them.
- The engine is under Apache 2.0, and the Supertonic 3 model under OpenRAIL-M, which allows commercial use within its list of prohibited uses.
Cloning at every request or a trained voice
Zonos and Higgs Audio copy a voice from a clip at every request, which needs the GPU every time. In SuperClonica, a voice is trained once in the studio from a clean 5 to 10 second recording, on a computer with an NVIDIA graphics card, or ordered on the exchange from an author who trains it. After that it runs on any processor and in all 31 languages, with a trace of the accent of the original recording. Clone only voices whose owners agreed.
Which one to choose
Choose Zonos for emotion control and cloning on a GPU in its five languages, Chinese and Japanese included. Choose Higgs Audio for research across more than 100 languages, or with a commercial license from Boson AI. Choose SuperClonica when speech has to run on ordinary computers and servers, in a product you sell, with ready narrator and character voices and a one-line install.
