Is this voice AI? How to tell, and how to avoid voice scams

Today a convincing copy of a voice can be trained from a few seconds of recording. SuperClonica’s own studio needs a clean clip of 5 to 10 seconds, so we know first-hand how little it takes. Scammers use the same kind of technology in calls and voice messages that sound like a relative in trouble, a boss or a bank.

This guide explains the signs that a voice may be synthetic, why you should never rely on them alone, and the habits that protect you whatever the voice sounds like.

Signs a voice may be synthetic

None of these signs is proof. Good synthetic voices avoid them, and real people on a bad connection show them. Judge the request, not the voice.

  • An even, unchanging rhythm with few breaths or hesitations.
  • Stress on the wrong word, odd pauses, or numbers and names read strangely.
  • Long gaps before each answer and no natural reaction when you interrupt.
  • A background that is unnaturally clean, or that loops.

Hear what AI voices sound like

The best way to train your ear is to listen. Open any voice in the SuperClonica catalog, type a line of 30 to 100 characters and press Voice it: in a few seconds you hear how natural a synthetic voice can be, free and with no account. Try the same line in several voices.

The real red flags in a call

A real bank will not ask you to read out a one-time code or move money to a safe account, and a relative in real trouble will understand if you call back.

  • Urgency: something terrible will happen unless you act right now.
  • Secrecy: do not tell anyone, do not hang up, do not call back.
  • Unusual payment: gift cards, crypto, a transfer to a so-called safe account.
  • Requests for one-time codes, passwords or remote access to your device.

Protect yourself and your family

Hang up and call the person back on a number you already know. Agree a family code word, or ask a question only the real person can answer. Talk about these scams with older relatives, who are targeted most. If money has already been sent, contact your bank at once and report it to the police. AI-voice detection tools exist, but none is reliable enough to bet money on.

How responsible voice services behave

Voice technology has honest uses: narration, accessibility, games, people who have lost their voice. The Supertonic 3 model license, OpenRAIL-M, forbids impersonating someone without consent, deceiving or harassing, and the SuperClonica terms forbid presenting synthetic audio as a real person’s words. Voices of public figures in the catalog are labeled as parody. If you find a synthetic copy of your voice used without permission, report it to the service that hosts it.
