A free text to speech API key: no card, ready in a minute

Most text to speech APIs ask for a billing account before the first request, even on their free tier. If all you want is to try an API in your app, a bot or a script, that is a lot of setup.

The SuperClonica speech API gives a free key to anyone who signs in with Google or GitHub. No card, no trial that ends: the free plan voices a minute of audio every day. This guide shows how to get the key, what it can do and when you will need more.

Get the key

Open SuperClonica and sign in with Google or GitHub. In your workspace open Speech API, give the key a name and create it. The key starts with sc_ and is shown once: copy it into an environment variable such as SUPERCLONICA_KEY and never commit it to a repository. You can create up to 20 keys and delete any of them.

What the free plan includes

The free plan is meant for trying the API and for small jobs that run every day.

  • 1 minute of audio a day, counted by the real length of what was voiced; a failed request counts nothing.
  • The ten stock voices of Supertonic 3, your own trained voices and catalog voices you bought.
  • 31 languages, ogg, mp3 or wav, and streaming with the first sound from 300 ms in our measurements.
  • The same endpoint, limits and answers as the paid plans, so code written on the free key keeps working.

The answer is the audio file itself. GET /api/v1/usage tells you how many seconds are left today, and GET /api/v1/voices which voices the key may use.

When a minute a day is not enough

The paid plans are billed by time, not characters, and bought from the wallet on the site: Starter for $5 a month gives 3 minutes every 10 minutes, up to 216 hours a month used without a break, and unlocks every voice of the catalog. If you would rather pay nothing at all and have the hardware, run the free SuperClonica engine on your own computer: it has no key and no quota.
