Voicemod alternative: type instead of talk

Voicemod is a real-time AI voice changer and soundboard for PC and Mac: you speak into the microphone and others hear you as a robot, a monster or one of its 200+ voices. It is the right tool when you want to talk in a different voice live.

Some people look for an alternative for other reasons: they cannot or do not want to speak, they need clean character lines for clips and soundboards, or they are on Linux. For those cases, text to speech is often the better fit. This guide shows how to do it with SuperClonica.

What Voicemod does

Voicemod changes the voice you speak with in real time, adds effects, and has a soundboard where you assign sounds to keys. Its Voicelab lets you build and tweak voices. Its website offers it for PC and Mac.

When typing beats talking

A voice changer still needs your voice. Text to speech does not: you type, and a character voice speaks. That suits players who are mute, shy or next to sleeping family, clean lines for videos and memes, stream alerts, and soundboard sounds. SuperClonica is not a live voice changer; it voices the text you type.

Make soundboard clips free

On the page of any voice, type a line of 30 to 100 characters, choose the language and press Voice it, then download the clip, with no account. Add it to any soundboard that plays audio files. For many clips, install the free engine with python -m pip install superclonica-cpu and run superclonica --text "GG, see you next round." --voice voice.json --lang en --output clip.mp3 for each line.

Speak in games and Discord by typing

A virtual audio cable, such as the free VB-CABLE on Windows, turns the engine’s output into a microphone that Discord, VRChat or a game can pick. Our VRChat text-to-speech guide has a small script that speaks each line you type in about half a second on a desktop processor. The engine also installs on Linux and macOS with pip; on Linux, a virtual device in PulseAudio or PipeWire does the cable’s job.

Voices and fair use

The catalog has fan-made voices of game, cartoon and anime characters, narrators and announcers, plus free voices such as Gollum and Brainrot. Character voices are not the original actors; do not use a voice to pass yourself off as a real person or another player, and follow the rules of each server and game.
