DECtalk online: Perfect Paul, the builds and modern alternatives

DECtalk is the classic speech synthesizer of the 1980s and 1990s, the robotic voice of Perfect Paul known from screen readers, internet memes and countless joke videos. People still look for it: to make it say something funny, to sing with its voice codes or to hear the voices again.

This guide explains where today’s DECtalk builds come from, how to try it in a browser, why its license is a question mark and when a modern voice is the better choice.

Where DECtalk comes from today

The original developer, the late Edward Bruckert, shared DECtalk files on the DECtalk mailing list in 2015. A community project on GitHub keeps modern builds of that code for Windows, Linux and macOS, and links a version that runs in the browser with WebAssembly. The classic voices are there: Perfect Paul, Beautiful Betty, Huge Harry, Frail Frank, Doctor Dennis, Kit the Kid, Uppity Ursula, Rough Rita and Whispering Wendy.

Is DECtalk free to use?

GitHub shows no recognised open-source license for the repository, and DECtalk was a commercial product. Playing with it at home is one thing; for a game, an app, a channel you monetize or anything you sell, do not assume you have the rights. Check with the rights holders or a lawyer first.

A modern voice instead

If you need speech people can listen to for long, a neural engine sounds human rather than robotic. The free SuperClonica engine runs Supertonic 3 offline on an ordinary processor in 31 languages: install it with python -m pip install superclonica-cpu and run superclonica --text-file script.txt --voice M3 --lang en --output script.wav. The ten stock voices may be used commercially.

Still want a robot?

For a robotic or retro sound you are allowed to use, voice the line with a stock voice and add an effect: our robot voice guide shows a ring-modulation snippet, and the Microsoft Sam guide shows an 8-bit, low-rate retro version. The catalog also has character voices for memes and sketches, and any voice can be tried free on a line of 30 to 100 characters.

Which to choose

DECtalk for nostalgia, voice codes and memes at home. SuperClonica for natural speech, clear rights to the stock voices, character voices and offline work in 31 languages.
