A Voicebox alternative, and when you need one

Voicebox is a free, open-source voice studio under the MIT license: it clones a voice from a few seconds of audio, switches between eight TTS engines, speaks 23 languages, adds effects, edits multi-voice stories, takes dictation and gives AI agents a voice over MCP. It is one of the most popular voice projects on GitHub, and for many people it is the right tool.

This guide is for the cases where it is not: when you want ready-made character voices, a single fast model that runs on an ordinary CPU, a command line for scripts, or a hosted API. If you were looking for Meta’s Voicebox, see the last section.

What Voicebox does well

Zero-shot cloning from a reference sample, 50+ preset voices, delivery control by text instructions, paralinguistic tags like laugh and sigh in Chatterbox Turbo, eight audio effects, a timeline editor for conversations and podcasts, system-wide dictation with Whisper, a REST API and an MCP server. It runs locally on macOS and Windows and in Docker; on Linux it is built from source. If you want one desktop app for every voice task, it is hard to beat.

Where SuperClonica is different

SuperClonica is one engine for one model, Supertonic 3, tuned for speed on an ordinary processor, with 31 languages. Instead of cloning at generation time, each voice is trained once and becomes a small JSON file that runs anywhere. The catalog has about 190 ready voices, narrators, announcers and fan-made characters, and every one can be tried free on a line of 30 to 100 characters. For your own voice, train it in the studio from a short recording.

For scripts, servers and bots

Install the free engine with python -m pip install superclonica-cpu on Windows, macOS with Apple Silicon or Linux and voice a file with one command: superclonica --text-file script.txt --voice F2 --lang en --output script.wav. The same engine is a Python library, and the hosted speech API returns audio from one POST request, with a free plan of 3 minutes of audio a day. That suits bots, games and pipelines that should not depend on a desktop app.

Which to choose

Choose Voicebox for zero-shot cloning, expressive tags, dictation and an all-in-one studio, and if you have a GPU for the larger engines. Choose SuperClonica for ready character voices, fast offline generation on a CPU, 31 languages in one model, a light pip install or an API. Both are free to try, and nothing stops you from using both: export WAV from one and edit it in the other.

If you meant Meta’s Voicebox

Meta announced a research speech model called Voicebox in 2023 and did not release it to the public, citing the risk of misuse. There is nothing to download, so the practical alternatives are open projects like the Voicebox studio above or engines such as SuperClonica.
