Fortnite text to speech: how to turn it on and off
Fortnite can read text chat aloud. The option belongs to Epic’s own text to speech, which works the same in Fortnite, the Epic Games Launcher and Epic’s mobile apps. It is handy when you cannot look at the chat, and surprising when it starts talking and you do not know why.
This guide follows Epic’s help page: what the feature reads, where to switch it on or off, and how to get character voices for Fortnite clips and streams.
What Fortnite text to speech does
According to Epic, text to speech reads incoming text chat messages aloud automatically and says who sent each message first. You can also pick messages to read, or start reading from a chosen message. It reads the messages visible in the chat, and Epic lists it as available in English.
Turn it on
Open the communication settings and turn on “Read Messages Aloud”. The same option exists on every platform where Epic offers the feature, including Fortnite, the Epic Games Launcher on PC and the Epic mobile apps.
Turn it off
If chat messages are read aloud and you do not want that, switch “Read Messages Aloud” off in the same communication settings. When the speech is the console itself reading menus, the console’s screen reader is on instead: our guides to PS5 text to speech and Xbox party chat show where to switch it off.
Character voices for Fortnite clips
Fortnite reads chat with its own voice, which you cannot change to a character. For montages, memes and stream alerts in a character’s voice, open a voice in the SuperClonica catalog, type 30 to 100 characters and download the line free, with no account. For many lines, install the free engine on a PC with python -m pip install superclonica-cpu.
