WhatsApp text to speech: have messages read aloud, or send text as voice

WhatsApp has no button that reads a chat aloud, yet you can still listen to your messages hands-free: the phone’s assistant does it. And if you want the opposite, turning your own text into a spoken clip to send, that works too, as an audio file.

This guide covers both directions: how Siri, Google Assistant and screen readers read WhatsApp messages, and how to send a text as a natural-sounding voice.

WhatsApp itself does not read aloud

There is no read-aloud option inside WhatsApp. Reading messages is done by the phone: the voice assistant reads new messages, and the screen reader can read whole chats. Searches for a WhatsApp text-to-speech setting usually end up here.

iPhone: ask Siri

WhatsApp added Siri support in 2017. Say something like “Hey Siri, read my WhatsApp messages”, and Siri reads the unread ones and lets you reply by voice. Allow WhatsApp in Siri’s settings if it is not on yet. Siri reads unread messages only: once you open the chat, there is nothing left to read.

Android: Google Assistant and TalkBack

Google Assistant can read messages from WhatsApp and other apps when you say “read my messages”; it works from your notifications, so it needs notification access, and it offers to reply by voice. To hear a whole chat, the screen readers do it on both systems: TalkBack on Android and VoiceOver or Speak Screen on iPhone, as our Android and iPhone guides explain.

Send text as a voice

To send a line as a spoken clip, voice it on any SuperClonica voice page: type 30 to 100 characters, listen free, download and share the file to the chat. It arrives as an audio file rather than a recorded voice note. Our AI voice message guide covers voices for messages and how to make them sound natural.
