Waze custom voice: drive with directions in any voice

Waze lets you replace its navigation voice with your own recordings, and from time to time it offers special celebrity or character voices that disappear when the promotion ends. Many drivers want a voice that stays: a favourite character, a calm narrator or a family member.

This guide explains the official way to record a Waze voice and how to fill it with any voice you like, voiced with the free SuperClonica engine.

The official way: record your own voice

According to the Waze Help Center, open Waze, tap the voice under Current voice, tap New voice and then OK. Tap each phrase, record it, play it back to check it, and tap Save. When you are done, tap Done, enter a name for the voice and tap Add. If you use Android Auto or CarPlay, record on the phone and disconnect it first; the voice you choose on the phone then plays in the car.

Why special voices disappear

Waze Help says special voices are available for a limited time and some only in certain regions; when the promotion ends, directions go back to the default voice. A voice you record yourself stays in Custom voices until you delete it.

Use any voice for the recording

Waze records through the phone microphone, so you can play prepared audio to it. Write down the phrases Waze shows, voice each one: hear voices free on their pages with 30 to 100 characters, then install the free engine with python -m pip install superclonica-cpu and run, for example, superclonica --text-file waze.txt --voice voice.json --lang en --normalize --output turn_left.wav for each phrase. While Waze records a phrase, play its file from a computer or speaker held close to the phone in a quiet room.

Get clean recordings

Use --normalize so every phrase has the same loudness, start playback right after you tap record, and stop as soon as the phrase ends. Play each recording back in Waze and redo any phrase that sounds quiet or cut off. Keep the speaker volume moderate: too loud distorts in the phone microphone.

Share it and keep it fair

Waze lets you share a custom voice with friends, as long as you are not using it at that moment. Character voices in the catalog are fan-made, so share them as fan fun, and use a real person’s voice only with their consent; you can train your own voice in the studio from a 5 to 10 second recording. The engine speaks 31 languages; Chinese is not supported yet.
