OneNote text to speech: hear your notes

OneNote can read a page aloud through Immersive Reader, which helps when proofreading, studying or giving your eyes a rest. It plays inside OneNote, though, so you cannot take the audio with you.

This guide shows the built-in way according to Microsoft, and how to turn your notes into audio files with the free SuperClonica engine.

Read a page aloud with Immersive Reader

According to Microsoft Support, open the page, select View and then Immersive Reader. Click the word where you want to start and select Play. The reader highlights the text as it goes, and Esc closes it. The steps can look slightly different between OneNote versions.

Change the voice and speed

In Immersive Reader, open Voice Settings. The Voice Speed slider makes the reader faster or slower, Voice type switches between a male and a female voice, and the Voice list offers other voices; Download More Voices adds more voices and languages. Press Play to hear each change.

Turn notes into audio files

To listen on a walk or in the car, copy the page text into a text file, install the free engine with python -m pip install superclonica-cpu and run, for example, superclonica --text-file notes.txt --voice voice.json --lang en --output notes.wav. Each section can be its own file, named like the page, so revision sounds like your notebook. It runs offline, and your notes never leave your computer.

Write notes that sound good

Turn bullet fragments into short sentences, spell out abbreviations the way they should be heard and add a full stop after headings so the voice pauses. For dense material slow the voice with --speed 0.9; for review go faster with 1.2.

Pick a voice you like

Hear catalog voices free on their pages with a line of 30 to 100 characters, no account needed, from calm narrators to characters, or train your own voice in the studio from a 5 to 10 second recording. The engine speaks 31 languages; Chinese is not supported yet.
