iPhone charging sound: add a custom sound or voice line, or turn it off
iPhone has no setting for a custom charging sound. The funny lines and sounds people hear when they plug in come from a Shortcuts automation that runs when a charger is connected. The same automation explains a phone that suddenly starts talking when it charges.
This guide shows how to set one up with your own audio, how to change it and how to switch it off, based on Apple’s Shortcuts guide. Menu names move a little between iOS versions.
How it works
Shortcuts has a Charger trigger with two options: Is Connected runs your shortcut when you start charging, by cable, wirelessly or with a charging case, and Is Disconnected runs it when you stop. A Battery Level trigger can run a shortcut when the battery equals or rises above a percentage, which is handy for a full-charge alert.
Make the sound or voice line
Any short audio file works. For a spoken line, open a voice in the SuperClonica catalog in Safari, type a line of 30 to 100 characters such as “Power restored, systems online”, press the voice button and download the recording, free and without an account. Save it in the Files app, on your iPhone or in iCloud Drive. If you only want plain speech, the Speak Text action reads a typed phrase in an iPhone voice instead.
Set up the automation
In Shortcuts, create a shortcut. To play your file, add a File action that picks the audio, then a Play Sound action that uses it; Apple Community answers note the File action has to come first, or you hear only the default tone. Then add the Charger trigger with Is Connected: on iOS 27 tap the shortcut, Edit, then Automation. To let it run without asking, open the shortcut’s Privacy options and turn on Allow Running When Locked.
Change it or turn it off
To change the sound, edit the shortcut and pick another file. To stop it, open the shortcut and remove its Charger trigger, or delete the shortcut. If your iPhone talks when charging and you did not set it up, look in the Automation list in Shortcuts: someone may have added a charger automation, often from a shared shortcut.
On Android phones
On a Pixel, the plug-in sound and vibration is one switch: Settings, Sound and vibration, Charging sounds and vibration, and it needs the ring sound on. On a Samsung Galaxy, the charging sound belongs to the system sounds under Settings, Sounds and vibration, System sound, where you pick the sound theme and can switch individual sounds off.
Ideas and fair use
Popular lines are a robot power-up, a character catching their breath or an announcer saying the battery is full. Character voices in the catalog are fan-made, so keep them for your own phone and fun, and use a real person’s voice only with their consent.
