# Text to speech for language learning Updated 2026-10-24 A textbook gives you sentences, but you need to hear them: how they flow, where the stress falls, how fast people talk. Text to speech turns any sentence you study into audio, as many times as you want, at the speed you want. SuperClonica voices speak 31 languages, can be tested free online, and a free engine makes listening material and audio flashcards on your own computer. This guide shows how to use them for learning, and where a machine voice is not enough. ## What text to speech helps with It complements a teacher and real conversations; it does not replace them. - Listening: hear the sentences of your lesson instead of only reading them. - Shadowing: play a sentence, pause, repeat it aloud with the same rhythm. - Audio flashcards: one short file per sentence for Anki or any card app. - Slower practice: the same sentence at a lower speed until you catch every word. - Dialogues: two voices for the two speakers of a textbook dialogue. ## Hear any sentence free online On the page of any voice, type a sentence of 30 to 100 characters in the language you study, choose that language and press Voice it. In a few seconds you can listen and download the recording. No account is needed. ## Listening practice and flashcards offline Language codes are the usual two letters: en, es, fr, de, it, pt, ja, ko, ru, ar, hi and more; Chinese is not supported yet. - Install the free engine: python -m pip install superclonica-cpu. - Voice a whole lesson more slowly: superclonica --text-file lesson.txt --voice F2 --lang es --speed 0.9 --output lesson.mp3. The default speed is 1.05; lower values are slower. - Make one file per sentence for flashcards from Python, after tts = Superclonica(): for i, line in enumerate(open("cards.txt", encoding="utf-8")): audio, sr = tts.synthesize(line.strip(), voice="F2", lang="es"); tts.save(f"card{i}.ogg", audio). - The engine runs offline, so your study texts never leave your computer. ## Choose the right voice Every voice speaks all 31 languages, but a little accent of its original recording can remain. For listening practice, pick a voice originally recorded in the language you study, or one of the ten stock voices of the model, M1 to M5 and F1 to F5, which need no extra files. Use one voice for the lesson and another for the second speaker of a dialogue, so you learn to follow different voices. ## Where a machine voice is not enough Synthetic speech is a good model for everyday sentences, but it can misread rare words, names, homographs and stress. Numbers are read as words in most languages, yet they are not inflected: in languages such as Russian or Polish, write numbers as words when the case matters.
